Under the cover of darkness-A short story

He stood at a considerable distance from the house.Perfectly camouflaged.Silent.Relaxed.He was in no danger, and besides he had the advantage of darkness.

In the widow,a girl was visible, sitting engrossed in a book.Behind her, lazing on the floor was her younger brother. The window was wide open, hardly a few feet off the ground.

He knew the wait wouldn’t be long, and was more than worth the time.He walked to and fro,not because of nervousness but more for the want of something to do.As he paced about his eyes quickly scanned the sorrounding, alert for any untoward movement. He waited.

The girl set the book upside down on the table, open at where she stopped reading. She was tired and her brother had already gone to bed.She switched off the last remaining light bulb and got into bed.

Next day morning she got up,as usual, before anyone else in the house. And groggily went to make her ‘morning must have’,a mug of coffee.Stepping into the kitchen she stopped dead in her tracks.Speechlessly staring at the mess in front of her. Then the explosion came:
“Goddammit!!!Mom,the cat got in the kitchen again.”
